This year we commemorate the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River. This is a significant event; the signing of the Convention on the Protection of the Danube River initiated cross-border cooperation aimed at the protection of the Danube and its tributaries. The Convention was signed on 29th June 1994 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
On 25th January 2024, a seminar Meeting of researchers in the Jizera Mountains was held in the conference centre of T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute (TGM WRI) in Prague. It presented (mainly long-term) research projects implemented in the Jizera Mountains and focused on atmospheric precipitation, forest soils and forests, waters and their biota in recent decades, i.e. from peak acidification to current phenomena associated with climate change. However, no less important was the personal meeting of people who research, permanently work or live in the Jizera Mountains and are interested in the development of the situation in this area, as well as the final debate open to all.
He has been Director of TGM WRI for a year. How does he evaluate this first year and what has he already managed to change for the better in our Institute? How does he remember his twenty years at the Institute as regular employee? And what are his plans and goals for the future regarding the direction of TGM WRI? „I would like to continue fulfilling my vision of creating a recognized and functioning institute of national and European importance as a research base for the field of water management with such a working culture and environment that it would be a target and prestigious workplace for quality and satisfied experts willing to actively cooperate,“ says the Director of our Institute, and newly also the president of the International Commission for the Protection of the Elbe, Ing. Tomá Fojtík.
Since 2021, research on selected issues related to the collection, sorting, processing, and reuse of selected types of biodegradable waste has been carried out at TGM WRI within the „Centre of Environmental Research: Waste management, circular economy and environmental security“ (CEVOOH), which was supported as part of the call of the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic „Environment for life“, Subprogramme 3 „Long-term environmental and climate perspectives“, for the period 2021–2026. The research follows on from a number of partial research projects and tasks, an overview of which can be found, for example, on the HEIS WRI website [1] under the Projects tab.

VÚV TGM se po více než 11 letech dočkal nového webu. Původně byla snaha představit nový web v rámci výročí 100 let od založení instituce na konci roku 2019, nicméně celkový rozsah změn si nakonec vyžádal širší diskuzi napříč celou institucí tak, aby se pracovníci ústavu mohli se záměrem, motivací a především účelem nového webu podrobně seznámit. Tím, že nejde o pouhou změnu designu, ale o zcela nový web včetně grafiky a struktury, bylo toto přechodné období jistě na místě a my ve VÚV TGM věříme, že návštěvníci z řad laické i odborné veřejnosti jeho uživatelskou vstřícnost a přehlednost brzy ocení.

On Friday, August 13, 2021, our longtime colleague RNDr. Eva KOČKOVÁ left us at the premature age of 92.
Výzkumný ústav vodohospodářský T. G. Masaryka jakožto vydavatel časopisu Vodohospodářské technicko-ekonomické informace (VTEI) a zároveň veřejná výzkumná organizace v rezortu Ministerstva životního prostředí dlouhodobě podporuje otevřený přístup k datům a sdílení datových sad pro využití dalšími uživateli. Již od roku 2001 jsou na internetu dostupné datové sady vodního hospodářství zahrnuté do Hydro-ekologického informačního systému (HEIS), který VÚV vyvíjí již od 90. let [1]. Naplňuje tak Národní strategii otevřeného přístupu ČR k vědeckým informacím na léta 2017–2020, kterou Vláda České republiky schválila 14. června 2017 [2] a jež navazuje na už dříve deklarované potřeby a výhody sdílení vědeckých a odborných dat.
Ve vodařině se mezi odborníky i veřejností často diskutuje o suchu, povodních, kvalitě vody ke koupání, o zajištění zásobování pitné vody atd., a to vždy podle toho, co zrovna nastane. Je však stejná pozornost věnována například zajištění další generace českých vodohospodářů? Dokáže současný mediální pohled na vodní hospodářství přitáhnout mladé studenty k vodohospodářským oborům? Měl jsem možnost si na toto téma popovídat s panem doc. dr. Ing. Pavlem Fošumpaurem, zástupcem vedoucího katedry hydrotechniky Fakulty stavební ČVUT v Praze.
V letošním roce je tomu rovných 25 let od zahájení vývoje (a následně pak provozu) Hydroekologického informačního systému VÚV TGM (HEIS VÚV). Tato doba je z hlediska kontinuálního vývoje a provozu informačního systému v současném prostředí takřka neustálých technologických a organizačních změn téměř úctyhodná a zcela jistě si zaslouží jak alespoň malé ohlédnutí za uplynulým obdobím, tak také stručnou rekapitulaci zaměřenou na současnost informačního systému (čtenář může namítnout, že zde by se nabízelo zmínit se podrobněji i o výhledu a plánech do budoucnosti, v této oblasti si však spekulovat příliš netroufáme, a proto ji zmíníme pouze stručně v závěru textu).

Ing. Miroslav Kněžek, CSc., who worked at the TGM Water Research Institute, p.r.i., for almost four decades and who has contributed significantly to that the TGM WRI is respected authority in the field of hydrology and hydrogeology.
For more than 60 years, the issue of the occurrence and behavior of radioactive substances in water has been dealt with in the Water Management Research Institute. With the observation of natural and artificial radionuclides in the hydrosphere, the team started under the guidance of Dr. Ing. Jaroslav Bulíček.
