Forecast of water resource security in the Czech republic by 2050

This article presents the methods and results of an assessment of the security of water abstraction and minimum flow rates through 2050, taking into account the potential impacts of climate change on water resources and projected water demand based on socioeconomic development forecasts. The study was conducted on a national scale. Water bodies defined for water planning purposes were selected as the minimum spatial scale.

The impact of the hydrological situation on water quality – assessment options

Changing climatic and hydrological conditions also affect the quality of water in streams and reservoirs. A number of studies have been published on this topic, mostly focused on specific areas and situations. The Czech Republic has sufficiently long and detailed series of monitoring of both flows and quality to enable detailed data analysis to trace the prevailing types of relationships depending on the characteristics of the catchment area and sources of pollution.

Predicting effluent BOD5 in wastewater treatment using machine learning

Accurate and quick prediction of effluent Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5) is important for maintaining regulatory standards and improving the operation of wastewater treatment (WWT) plants. Traditional laboratory tests for BOD5 take several days, causing delays in assessing water quality and adjusting plant performance. To overcome this issue, this study develops a machine learning model to estimate effluent BOD5 using easily available plant data. A dataset from a large-scale wastewater treatment plant was used, comprising 12 variables from both influent and effluent data, such as pH, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), conductivity, Total Suspended Solids (TSS), BOD5, and temperature, with effluent BOD5 as the target variable.

Interview with Ing. Jiří Jílek, design and hydraulic engineer

Ing. Jiří Jílek is one of the leading figures in Czech hydraulic engineering. Throughout his professional career, he has designed, delivered, and supervised the construction of numerous water management projects, including river restoration schemes and urban water features. His work includes the system of ponds in Prague’s Stromovka Park, including the unique raft connection to the island, the water feature on Letná Plain, the Braník Water Biotope, the restoration of fire ponds in Lysolaje and Dolní Chabry, the restoration of the Rokytka River and the Botič, Kunratický, Motolský, and Šárecký streams, as well as the currently ongoing project to utilise mine water on Petřín Hill.
