This regular international event, held alternately in\u00a0the\u00a0Czech Republic and Germany, has, over more than three decades, established itself as an important professional and scientific platform for the\u00a0exchange of\u00a0knowledge in\u00a0the\u00a0field of\u00a0water management and water protection in\u00a0the\u00a0Elbe Basin.<\/p>\n<h2>THEME FOR 2025<\/h2>\n<p>This year\u2019s seminar carries the\u00a0central theme \u201cWater management in\u00a0the\u00a0Elbe Basin\u00a0\u2013 yesterday, today, and tomorrow,\u201d reflecting the\u00a0long-term development, current challenges, and future perspectives in\u00a0managing the\u00a0region\u2019s water resources.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0seminar\u2019s content is structured into three main\u00a0thematic areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Security of\u00a0water resources and ecosystem functions in\u00a0the\u00a0context of\u00a0climate change,<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0Elbe as a waterway \u2013 opportunities and limitations,<\/li>\n<li>Strategies for water monitoring and management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>PROGRAMME AND INVOLVEMENT OF INSTITUTIONS<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0seminar programme includes 27 professional lectures, a poster session, and three specialist excursions focusing on practical aspects of\u00a0water protection and utilisation. T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute (TGM WRI) is actively involved in\u00a0the\u00a0programme through two lectures and four poster presentations.<\/p>\n<p>As with all German seminars, the\u00a0main\u00a0organiser of\u00a0this year\u2019s event is the\u00a0Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ). When the\u00a0seminar is held in\u00a0Czechia, the\u00a0role of\u00a0main\u00a0organiser alternates between the\u00a0Labe, Vltava,\u00a0 and Oh\u0159e River Basin\u00a0Authorities.<\/p>\n<h2>INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMME<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0seminar is prepared with the\u00a0involvement of\u00a0a programme committee composed of\u00a0representatives from institutions in\u00a0both Czechia and Germany. The\u00a0International Commission for the\u00a0Protection of\u00a0the\u00a0Elbe River (ICPER) also plays an important role, providing organisational, professional, and linguistic support for the\u00a0entire event through its secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0programme offers a wide range of\u00a0lectures. On the\u00a0German side, notable contributions include Norbert Kamjunke (UFZ) with his presentation \u201cTransformation of\u00a0nutrients and dissolved organic matter in\u00a0the\u00a0river from source to sea,\u201d and J\u00f6rg Tittel from the\u00a0same institution with \u201cElbe river modification for navigation reduces floodplain\u00a0water resilience to climate change\u00a0\u2013 studies on the\u00a0middle Elbe near Magdeburg.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>TIMELINE OF PAST SEMINARS<\/h2>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vtei.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Vosika-obr-3.jpg\" rel=\"shadowbox[sbpost-36736];player=img;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-36536 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.vtei.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Vosika-obr-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"174\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vtei.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Vosika-obr-3.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.vtei.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Vosika-obr-3-300x65.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.vtei.cz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Vosika-obr-3-768x167.jpg 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/174;\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The Czech side will also be represented by a number of contributions. Notable examples include Pavel Richter (TGM WRI) with his presentation \u201cCurrent state\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0landscape at the\u00a0site of\u00a0a former pond system in\u00a0the\u00a0Doubrava Basin\u00a0and possibilities for its transformation in\u00a0the\u00a0context of\u00a0ongoing climate change,\u201d and Karel B\u0159ezina (Vltava River Basin\u00a0Authority) with \u201cReassessment of\u00a0the\u00a0security of\u00a0surface water supply from reservoirs under conditions of\u00a0climate change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0seminar topics suggest, attention will also be given to the\u00a0issue of\u00a0Elbe navigation. Examples include Iris Brunar (BUND: Friends of\u00a0the\u00a0Earth Germany) with her presentation \u201cPerspectives for a free-flowing Elbe: navigation, trends and potential,\u201d and Vojt\u011bch Dabrowsk\u00fd (Ministry of\u00a0Transport of\u00a0the\u00a0Czech Republic) with \u201cThe\u00a0Elbe waterway as part of\u00a0the\u00a0European inland waterway network.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>HISTORY AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE SEMINAR<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0first Magdeburg Seminar on Water Protection was held in\u00a01988 in\u00a0Magdeburg. Since 1992, the\u00a0seminar has alternated regularly between Czechia and Germany. It was last held in\u00a0Magdeburg in\u00a02008, while the\u00a0most recent seminar (2023) was organised in\u00a0Karlovy Vary by the\u00a0Oh\u0159e River Basin\u00a0Authority in\u00a0cooperation with the\u00a0ICPER.<\/p>\n<p>For more than thirty years, the\u00a0seminar has been a key forum for experts from science, public administration, and water management practice. It provides a space for sharing up-to-date scientific knowledge, discussing strategic approaches, and strengthening cross-border cooperation within\u00a0the\u00a0Elbe Basin. Its importance was underlined by the\u00a0words of\u00a0the\u00a0current ICPER President, Ing.\u00a0Tom\u00e1\u0161 Fojt\u00edk:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Water management in\u00a0the\u00a0Elbe Basin\u00a0is a task that transcends state borders and generations.
