One of\u00a0them is the\u00a0\u201c<em>Water Centre<\/em>\u201d, which is the\u00a0acronym of\u00a0the\u00a0\u201c<em>Water Management in\u00a0the\u00a0Czech Republic in\u00a0the\u00a0Context of\u00a0Climate Change<\/em>\u201d project. The\u00a0lead organization is T. G. Masaryk Water Research Institute, p.\u00a0r.\u00a0i.\u00a0(TGM\u00a0WRI). Other seven partner organizations are the\u00a0Nature Conservation Agency of\u00a0the\u00a0Czech Republic (NCA\u00a0CR), Czech University of\u00a0Life Sciences (CZU), Czech\u00a0Technical University in\u00a0Prague, Faculty of\u00a0Civil Engineering (FCE CTU), Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (CHMI), CzechGlobe, The\u00a0Silva Tarouca\u00a0Research Institute for\u00a0Landscape\u00a0and Ornamental Gardening, p.\u00a0r.\u00a0i.\u00a0(V\u00daKOZ), and the\u00a0University of\u00a0Chemistry and Technology, Prague\u00a0(UCT). The\u00a0project duration is from July 2020 to December 2026, so currently halfway through its duration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Water Centre<\/em>\u201d deals with defining future needs and issues in\u00a0the\u00a0field of\u00a0water management and water protection (including the\u00a0impact of\u00a0climate change) and possible measures to meet these needs and minimize problems.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting solutions and partial results are presented annually at the\u00a0\u201c<em>Water Centre<\/em>\u201d conferences. The\u00a0fourth conference took place at the\u00a0TGM WRI on November\u00a019,\u00a02024. The\u00a0morning presentations focused on more comprehensive topics, as two work packages (WP) were to be completed in\u00a02024.<\/p>\n<p>In\u00a0WP 1, the\u00a0research team addressed the\u00a0questions of\u00a0how much water will be available in\u00a0the\u00a0future, how much will be needed, and where the\u00a0biggest problems with securing it will arise. The\u00a0analyses cover a\u00a0longer time period, but the\u00a0main\u00a0conclusions were formulated for the\u00a0year 2050. Prof. Miroslav Trnka from the\u00a0CzechGlobe presented current climate change scenarios and their use for forecasting water availability. Dr. Adam Vizina compared the\u00a0results of\u00a0hydrological balance forecasts provided by global climate models (GCM) and the\u00a0regional model ALADIN, and Ing. Ladislav Ka\u0161p\u00e1rek, CSc., supplemented this presentation with a\u00a0brief summary of\u00a0how, from today\u2019s\u00a0perspective, predictions from older climate models from the\u00a01990s have come true. Ing. Ji\u0159\u00ed Dlabal summarized scenarios of\u00a0future water needs by individual sectors of\u00a0human activity (water consumption by the\u00a0population, in\u00a0crop and livestock production, in\u00a0industry, and in\u00a0the\u00a0energy sector). He pointed out that permitted water abstractions are much higher than current needs (more than double), and the\u00a0use of\u00a0permitted quantities would cause problems in\u00a0the\u00a0water balance. Ing. Petr Vysko\u010d presented the\u00a0results of\u00a0the\u00a0comparison of\u00a0future water resources and needs and pointed out in\u00a0which areas the\u00a0greatest water shortage can be expected in\u00a0the\u00a0Czech Republic. The\u00a0search for adaptation measures that can respond to these findings is mainly addressed by WP 3, which is currently being solved. View into the\u00a0hall<\/h6>\n<p>The\u00a0recently completed WP 6 focused on the\u00a0search and assessment of\u00a0sources of\u00a0surface water pollution, focusing on nutrients, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and heavy metals. The\u00a0research team organized a\u00a0workshop on this issue in\u00a0September 2024. At the\u00a0\u201cWater Centre\u201d conference, Assoc. Prof. Ivana Kabelkov\u00e1 from FCE CTU presented the\u00a0results of\u00a0the\u00a0assessment of\u00a0point sources of\u00a0pollution from the\u00a0pilot urbanized area of the\u00a0town of\u00a0Pe\u010dky. Based on a\u00a0series of\u00a0detailed measurements, the\u00a0proportion of\u00a0pollution entering surface waters through wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharges, from floodways, and also from storm water overflows was shown. Subsequently, Mgr.\u00a0Silvie Semer\u00e1dov\u00e1 summarized all key findings from this work package. A\u00a0draft version of\u00a0the\u00a0summary report was published on the\u00a0project website, the\u00a0final version is available from the\u00a0end of\u00a02024.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0afternoon presentations were devoted to topics from other work packages.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Jan Bindzar from UCT, outlined the\u00a0theses of\u00a0the\u00a0prepared methodology of\u00a0possible progressive procedures and techniques for reducing pollutant concentrations in\u00a0industrial wastewater, which are not commonly detected in\u00a0urban WWTPs. It turns out that technologies for removing specific pollutants purify the\u00a0water to such an extent that it is too clean for sewage and has rather the\u00a0character of\u00a0ballast water, and therefore its reuse should be considered.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Josef V. Datel talked about the\u00a0use of\u00a0artificial infiltration to replenish water sources (especially in\u00a0the\u00a0K\u00e1ran\u00fd water treatment plant) and showed a\u00a0selection of\u00a0locations in\u00a0deficit areas where the\u00a0possibility of\u00a0controlled groundwater replenishment will be assessed in\u00a0more detail in\u00a0the\u00a0future.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Pavla \u0160t\u011bp\u00e1nkov\u00e1 analyzed possible approaches to defining the\u00a0active zone of\u00a0floodplains, which was commissioned this year as operational research within\u00a0the\u00a0\u201c<em>Water Centre<\/em>\u201d. She then used examples to show how the\u00a0results differ according to individual methodologies. The\u00a0conclusions serve as a\u00a0basis for the\u00a0Ministry of\u00a0the\u00a0Environment decision on changes to regulations.<\/p>\n<p>Ing.
