The\u00a0annual conference Radionuclides and ionizing radiation in\u00a0water management<\/span><\/em> took place on 21st and 22nd May 2024 at the\u00a0Clarion Hotel in\u00a0\u010cesk\u00e9 Bud\u011bjovice. The\u00a0expert guarantor was Ing. Barbora Sedl\u00e1\u0159ov\u00e1 (TGM WRI) and the\u00a0organizational guarantor was Jan K\u0159\u00ed\u017e (\u010cVTVHS, z. s.). The\u00a0conference was attended by 63 experts, of\u00a0which 58 from the\u00a0Czech Republic and 5 from Slovak\u00a0Republic.<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0the\u00a0introductory lecture, Ing. Jan Varmu\u017ea (State Office for Nuclear Safety, S\u00daJB) informed about the\u00a0amendment of\u00a0the\u00a0Atomic Energy Act from the\u00a0point of\u00a0view of\u00a0monitoring radiation in\u00a0surface waters. In\u00a0the\u00a0following presentation, RNDr. Jana Slim\u00e1kov\u00e1, Ph.D. (Public Health Authority of\u00a0the\u00a0Slovak Republic), summarized the\u00a0experience of\u00a0monitoring radiation in\u00a0Slovac Republic. This was followed by a\u00a0lecture on the\u00a0amendment of\u00a0the\u00a0Atomic Energy Act from the\u00a0point of\u00a0view of\u00a0monitoring tritium in\u00a0waters, presented by Dr. Ing. Milan Hort (S\u00daJB). Then, Ing. Marcela Velkoborsk\u00e1 (S\u00daJB) continued with information regarding the\u00a0amendment of\u00a0the\u00a0relevant decrees on legislation for requirements for the\u00a0supply and treatment of\u00a0groundwater.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0following part dealt with the\u00a0measurement and evaluation of\u00a0the\u00a0content of\u00a0natural radionuclides with a\u00a0possible increased content of\u00a0natural radionuclides produced in\u00a0groundwater treatment plants. The\u00a0issue of\u00a0refining the\u00a0estimation of\u00a0uranium-234 content was presented by Ing. Tereza Doksansk\u00e1 (National Radiation Protection Institute, NRPI) and practical experience and suggestions for revising the\u00a0S\u00daJB recommendations were summarized by Ing. Tom\u00e1\u0161 Bouda (ALS Czech Republic). The\u00a0next topic was deep radioactive waste repository in\u00a0terms of\u00a0characterizing suitable locations by determining the\u00a0activities of\u00a0long-lived radionuclides in\u00a0groundwater. The\u00a0topic was presented by Mgr. Michal Fejgl, Ph.D. (NRPI). Ing. Hana S\u00fdbkov\u00e1 (National Institute for NBC Protection) reported on the\u00a0evaluation of\u00a0the\u00a0leaching of\u00a0radioactive elements from rock material from uranium mining dumps used for motorway construction. Recently, a\u00a0lot of\u00a0attention has been paid to the\u00a0issue of\u00a0early detection of\u00a0a\u00a0possible radioactive event. Therefore, in\u00a0his contribution, M.Sc.\u00a0Michal Fejgl,\u00a0Ph.D. (NRPI), presented the\u00a0results of\u00a0a\u00a0currently developed device enabling the\u00a0continuous determination of\u00a0gamma activity in\u00a0rainwater.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0next part dealt with the\u00a0occurrence of\u00a0artificial radionuclides in\u00a0surface waters. RNDr. Diana Mare\u0161ov\u00e1, Ph.D. (TGM WRI), summarized findings on existing data on tritium volume activities and on their development in\u00a0precipitation and surface waters in\u00a0the\u00a0Vltava and Elbe basins. Mgr. Enrico Mariaca (Water Research Institute, V\u00daVH) continued with information about volume activities in\u00a0border watercourses in\u00a0Slovakia. Ing. Eva Juranov\u00e1, Ph.D. (TGM WRI), presented findings from the\u00a0monitoring of\u00a0carbon-14 in\u00a0surface waters in\u00a0the\u00a0vicinity of\u00a0the\u00a0Dukovany and Temel\u00edn nuclear power stations. Other contributions dealt with the\u00a0determination of\u00a0long-lived radionuclides using Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), which can be used as a\u00a0tracer of\u00a0human nuclear activity. A\u00a0lecture by Ing. Tom\u00e1\u0161 Pr\u00e1\u0161ek (Department of\u00a0Nuclear Chemistry, FNSPE CTU) presented the\u00a0initial measurement of\u00a0uranium-236 in\u00a0environmental samples. Ing. Edita \u010cervenkov\u00e1 (Department of\u00a0Nuclear Chemistry, FNSPE CTU) reported on the\u00a0determination of\u00a0iodine-129 in\u00a0river water as a\u00a0tracer of\u00a0nuclear accidents and on the\u00a0effect of\u00a0reprocessing spent nuclear fuel on the\u00a0environment. The\u00a0use of\u00a0iodine-129 as an oceanographic tracer was presented by Ing. Miriam Mindov\u00e1 (Department of\u00a0Nuclear Chemistry, FNSPE CTU). Ing. Jakub Sochor (Department of\u00a0Nuclear Chemistry, FNSPE CTU, Faculty of\u00a0Environmental Technology, UCT Prague) outlined the\u00a0possibility of\u00a0using ionizing radiation to solve the\u00a0issue of\u00a0degradation of\u00a0antibiotic resistance genes in\u00a0water. In\u00a0conclusion, RNDr. Tom\u00e1\u0161 Soukup (Czech Metrology Institute) summarized the\u00a0determination of\u00a0radioactive indicators from the\u00a0point of\u00a0view of\u00a0metrology, and Ing. Lenka Fremrov\u00e1 (Sweco Hydroprojekt, a. s.) prepared an overview of\u00a0standards for the\u00a0determination of\u00a0radioactive substances in\u00a0water and other related standards. The\u00a0conference offered a\u00a0platform for sharing professional experience, presenting the\u00a0latest findings from research, and the\u00a0possibility of\u00a0establishing new collaboration between radiation safety and water management experts. The\u00a0participants appreciated the\u00a0wide range of\u00a0topics discussed and the\u00a0quality of\u00a0presentations, which contributed to a\u00a0better understanding of\u00a0the\u00a0issue of\u00a0radionuclides in\u00a0the\u00a0environment. At the\u00a0end of\u00a0the\u00a0meeting, it was recommended to organize the\u00a018th conference on Radionuclides and ionizing radiation in\u00a0water management<\/span> <\/em>in\u00a02026.<\/span><\/p>\n
