Since time immemorial, research in all scientific fields has brought countless new information and broadened the\u202fspectrum of\u202fcurrent knowledge. In<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>past, research was made more difficult by the\u202fthen possibilities of\u202fdisseminating newly acquired knowledge. Many scientists in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>world have asked the\u202fsame questions, proposed and tested similar hypotheses, obtained similar scientific results, and reached their own unique conclusions. The\u202fproblem was the\u202fvery limited possibility of\u202fsharing this new information, thus the\u202fpossibility of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>their mutual use and very often their preservation and availability to future generations. It is safe to say that in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>history of\u202fscience, a huge amount of\u202fknowledge and information was discovered that was not used enough, was discovered repeatedly, or was completely lost.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The present time brings countless possibilities and tools for collecting preserved historical data and using them in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>context of\u202ftoday\u2019s findings. The\u202fcollaboration of\u202fexperts from various scientific fields with historians proves to be very beneficial; they can find their way around archives, search them, and make historical documents from various fields of\u202fscience available for new processing and use. Another great benefit is the\u202fpossibility of\u202fdigitization and advanced technical processing of\u202fhistorical findings, and thus preserving it for future generations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These activities are supported by the\u202fprojects of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Programme for the\u202fSupport of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>applied Research and Experimental Development of\u202fNational and Cultural Identity (NAKI and NAKI II), announced by the\u202fMinistry of\u202fCulture. Since 2012, the\u202fTGM WRI employees have been intensively using this project programme to make available and re-use historical water management information and to compare it with current knowledge.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Long-term conceptual development of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>a research organisation<\/span><\/i> (\u201cLCDRO\u201d)<\/span> for 2018-2022, which is based on <\/span>the\u202fMethodology for Evaluating Research Organizations and Research, Development and Innovation Purpose-tied Aid Programmes<\/span><\/i> (<\/span>Methodology 17+<\/span><\/i>), approved by <\/span>Resolution of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>Government of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>Czech Republic No. 107\/2017<\/span><\/i>, on the<\/span>\u202fMethodology for Evaluating Research Organizations and Research, Development and Innovation Purpose-tied Aid Programmes<\/span><\/i>, since 2018, the\u202fresearch task RT11 <\/span>\u201cUse and popularisation of\u202fhistorical and current water management sources of\u202finformation for the\u202fdevelopment of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>an environmentally friendly society\u201d <\/span><\/i>has been included.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This part of\u202fLCDRO, with the\u202fcontribution of\u202fpurpose-tied institutional funds, supports research and the\u202fdissemination of\u202fknowledge, which in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>area of\u202fRT11 represents the\u202fuse of\u202fhistorical resources and experience in accordance with the\u202ftheme of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>area 5 (Environmentally friendly society) of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Research and Development Concept of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Ministry of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Environment for 2016\u20132025.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The research task is mainly linked to projects implemented under the\u202fNAKI programme, focused on water management topics from a historical perspective and activities within<\/span>\u202f<\/span>their implementation after their completion (<\/span>Tab. 1<\/span><\/i>).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The projects are oriented towards research and processing of\u202fhistorical sources of\u202finformation with the\u202faim of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>assessing the\u202fstate and effect of\u202fchanges on environmental components, natural resources, landscape, and people. The\u202fmost valuable contribution of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>these projects is the\u202fsearch, registration, and inventory of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>available documents related to the\u202ftopic. In addition to books and other written materials, other sources of\u202finformation include historical maps, photographs, archival materials, works of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>art, and personal experience from contemporary witness. Information from historical sources is processed and presented in classic and modern forms of\u202foutput so that they are accessible for further use and presentation to interested professionals and the\u202flay public. In addition to professional outputs, project results are made available in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>form of\u202fpopular science books, interactive maps, web applications, educational programmes, and public databases. The\u202fresults of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>projects are presented to the\u202fpublic through websites, exhibitions, workshops, seminars, conferences, media reports, etc.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Research task RT11 is currently divided into three sub-objectives:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

DC11-1 Research and processing of\u202fhistorical sources of\u202finformation in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>field of\u202fwater supply and management<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Within sub-objective DC11-1, research and processing of\u202fhistorical sources of\u202finformation is carried out in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>areas of\u202fwater supply and management, water treatment for the\u202fneeds of\u202fsettlements and industry, water supply, water purification, and historical development of\u202fwater management.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This part is supported by the\u202fongoing project <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/i>Water towers \u2013 identification, documentation, presentation, new utilization\u201d <\/span><\/i>within<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>NAKI II programme and the\u202fimplementation of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>project <\/span>\u201cPossibilities of\u202fwater recreation within<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>capital city of\u202fPrague (from history to the\u202fpresent)\u201d<\/span><\/i>, the\u202fcompleted project<\/span>\u201d Recreational potential of\u202fwater in Prague \u2013 status and perspectives\u201d <\/span><\/i>within<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Operational Programme Prague \u2013 Growth Pole of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Czech Republic, and <\/span>\u201cDocumentation, pasportization, archiving and proposal of\u202f chimney reservoir converting as an endangered group of\u202fheritage of\u202findustrial monuments in<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>Czech Republic\u201d<\/span><\/i>, implemented in 2013\u20132015 within<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>NAKI programme.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DC11-2 Research and processing of\u202fhistorical sources of\u202finformation in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>field of\u202fwater management in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>landscape<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Within sub-objective DC11-2, research and processing of\u202fhistorical sources of\u202finformation in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>areas of\u202fwater management in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>landscape, the\u202fimpacts of\u202fsignificant water management changes on further development (construction of\u202fwater works, water management treatment of\u202fwatercourses, extreme climatic phenomena, sources of\u202fpollution, etc.), and historical development of\u202fwater treatment.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The sub-objective is supported by the\u202fongoing projects <\/span>\u201cHistorical water management objects, their value, function and significance for the\u202fpresent\u201d<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>\u201cIrrigations \u2013 rediscovered heritage, their documentation and popularization\u201d<\/span><\/i>, implemented within<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>NAKI II programme, and the\u202fimplementation of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>completed projects <\/span>\u201cNon-invasive and economical techniques of\u202fwater elements\u00a0<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>environment quality and maintenance solution in<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>frame of\u202fhistorical monuments care\u201d<\/span><\/i> (NAKI) and <\/span>\u201cAssesment of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>agricultural land in<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>areas of\u202fextinct fishpond systems with the\u202faim of\u202fsupporting sustainable management of\u202fwater and soil resources in<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>Czech Republic\u201d<\/span><\/i> (KUS Programme of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>Ministry of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>agriculture).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>years 2012\u20132016, the\u202fcombination of\u202fhistorical water management topics was addressed in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>projects of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>NAKI programme <\/span>\u201cIdentification of\u202fsignificant areas with cultural and historical values threatened by natural and anthropogenic stresses\u201d <\/span><\/i>and<\/span> \u201cSubmerged villages \u2013 the\u202flost\u00a0 cultural and natural heritage of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>South Moravia\u201d (Tab. 1)<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

DC11-3 Environmental education and promotion of\u202fwater management issues with the\u202faim of\u202fcreating \u2028an environmentally friendly society<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Sub-objective DC11-3 is focused on current trends in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>transmission of\u202finformation to the\u202fpublic, awareness of\u202fprofessional activities in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>field of\u202fwater management, inclusion of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>professional and lay public in environmental education, training and awareness (environment\u00e1ln\u00ed vzd\u011bl\u00e1v\u00e1n\u00ed, v\u00fdchova a osv\u011bta, EVVO) and environmental consultancy (environment\u00e1ln\u00ed poradenstv\u00ed, EP), streamlining the\u202fpresentation of\u202fenvironmental protection in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>media, and expansion of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>portfolio of\u202fcontacts and presentation possibilities. Activities are carried out in cooperation with the\u202fTGM WRI PR department by publishing popularization articles and promoting project results in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>VTEI journal, on web and Facebook pages, and in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>media.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As part of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>activities of\u202fLCDRO <\/span>\u201cUse and popularisation of\u202fhistorical and current water management sources of\u202finformation for the\u202fdevelopment of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>an environmentally friendly society\u201d<\/span><\/i>, a number of\u202fprofessional outputs were created which were presented to the\u202fprofessional public in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>form of\u202fprofessional articles and presentations at scientific conferences and seminars and processed into methodologies. These outputs contribute to better results of\u202fTGM WRI in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>evaluation of\u202fresearch organizations and the\u202frelated allocation of\u202fpurpose-tied research support.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Other activities are aimed at popularizing interesting historical and contemporary water management topics. For this purpose, both within<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>projects and other activities of\u202fTGM WRI, popular-scientific types of\u202foutputs are created.               \u00a0<\/span>The research projects and other activities focused on historical topics showed the\u202fimportance of\u202fhistorical data which are often neglected, especially due to their poor availability. The\u202fstudy of\u202fthis type of\u202finformation sources often requires the\u202fcooperation of\u202fhistorians and archive workers, and also mutual helpfulness and cooperation between professional institutions or state enterprises and private companies that have their own professional archives. Equally important is the\u202fbenefit of\u202fworking with contemporary witness and preserving their memories, as well as private documents and archives, including photographic ones. A specific feature of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>a number of\u202fwater management systems, works, and objects is their continuous modernization and reconstruction with the\u202faim of\u202fensuring the\u202ffulfilment of\u202fcurrent social needs and requirements. For these reasons as well, it is important to be able to preserve, or at least document, their condition and equipment \u2013 including instrumentation \u2013 during different periods of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>their operation. It is therefore very worthwhile to dedicate oneself to such research, and thus save a lot of\u202fuseful and often irreplaceable information for future generations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

              Since time immemorial, research in all scientific fields has brought countless new information and broadened the spectrum of current knowledge. In the past, research was made more difficult by the then possibilities of disseminating newly acquired knowledge. Many scientists in the world have asked
