ABSTRACT\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Authenticity, in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>sense of\u202fcredibility or truthfulness, is one of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>key categories of\u202fheritage management. This paper deals with the\u202fissue of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>authenticity in relation to industrial heritage, specifically water management structures. In<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>case of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>these structures, emphasis is usually placed on the\u202fauthenticity of\u202ffunction, but two further types of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>authenticity are equally important: authenticity of\u202fmaterial substance or form (in relation to the\u202foriginal design and the\u202fstructure built on its basis), and, on the\u202fother hand, authenticity as a\u202fconsequence of\u202fhistorical development. This paper presents an analysis of\u202ffour model examples of\u202fwater management structures that are either legally protected heritage sites or have been proposed as candidates for heritage protection. The\u202fanalysis of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>their heritage values provides insights into the\u202findividual categories of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>authenticity and enables the\u202fformulation of\u202fprinciples for managing sites of\u202fheritage value.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

INTRODUCTION<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

One of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>most challenging heritage management categories to grasp is represented by the\u202fissue of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>authenticity of\u202fmonuments in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>sense of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>their credibility and truthfulness. Defining the\u202fconcept and setting sub-categories is essential for the\u202fdetermination of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>approach for monument management and is the\u202fsubject of\u202flong-standing discussions among experts. This was inspired by a\u202fbook called <\/span>Modern\u00ed pam\u00e1tkov\u00e1 p\u00e9\u010de (Modern heritage protection) <\/span><\/i>from 1903 written by Alois Riegl [1].<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Petr Kroupa explains two basic principles of\u202fheritage management via the\u202frelationship between authenticity and time: <\/span>\u201cWith the\u202femergence of\u202fpractical heritage management in today\u2019s sense, two basic and diametrically opposed concepts have clashed in practice and in<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>theoretical reflections on monuments to this day. The \u202ffirst one is based on the\u202f appreciation of \u202ftraces which time has left on the\u202foriginal material of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>a work and demands them to be respected. The\u202fother one regards a\u202ffully-fledged life of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>a work of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>art only in terms of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>\u202f\u2018authenticity\u2019 of\u202fits historical substance (i.e. in<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>form released from the\u202fartist\u2019s hands at<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>time) and demands traces of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>elapsed time to be deleted and the\u202finitial integrity of<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span><\/i>\u202f<\/span>work to be restored\u201d<\/span><\/i> [2]. These two approaches, analytic and synthetic, pervade the\u202fhistory of\u202fheritage management and are essential for both heritage assessment and authorisation of<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>level of\u202fintervention and determination of\u202fmethods for the\u202fmanagement of\u202fmonuments, which involve conservation, restoration, renewal, or reconstruction (in<\/span>\u202f<\/span>the<\/span>\u202f<\/span>sense of\u202frenewing extinct structures, parts and elements).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
