Their significance, also from the\u202fpoint of\u202fview from potential heritage protection, thus increases with the\u202fidentification and documentation not only of\u202fsolitary structures but, in particular, of\u202fentire systems \/ functional complexes with descriptions of\u202finterrelationships between them. Independent objects or structures do not need to be particularly exceptional, although their involvement in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wider functional complex can create a uniquely undertaken solution. In<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">field of\u202fwater management, criteria such as typological value, value of\u202ftechnological flow, authenticity of\u202fform and function, value of\u202ftechnological and systemic links with an overlap to agriculture and industry are especially important. Historical irrigation systems are an important but, until recently, rather ignored part of\u202fthis type of\u202fcultural heritage. These buildings have been the\u202fsubject of\u202fincreased interest in monument protection in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic since approximately the\u202fend of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><\/sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> century. Their importance has generally grown in particular in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">last decade in connection with climate change, which requires the\u202finvestigation of\u202feffective solutions and responses to its impacts. Historical irrigation systems are coming to the\u202ffore when it comes to the\u202fassessment of\u202fpotential for their renovation, reconstruction or, on the\u202fother hand, removal and replacement with more up-to-date technologies. From this point of\u202fview, and the\u202fpoint of\u202fview of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">connection with the\u202fcultural heritage of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic, it is important to identify and document in a timely manner possible heritage values of\u202fsuch objects and whole functional complexes, as well as define criteria and possibilities for their protection. Research of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">chosen systems was carried out by both fieldwork with pre-prepared mapping input, and by using modern UAV technologies. The \u202fdata was analysed and visualised with the\u202fhelp of\u202fGIS tools. The\u202fprocessing of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all obtained input documents enabled the\u202fcreation of\u202fmap sets and small maps for individual territories. The \u202ffirst stage involved the\u202fresearch of\u202fspecialised literature which deals with the\u202fhistory and technological irrigation systems in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic and neighbouring countries in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">context of\u202fheritage preservation and protection of\u202findustrial heritage. In connection with the\u202fdescription of\u202fhistorical development, the\u202ftypology of\u202firrigation systems, including diagrams, was carried out. For defined areas of\u202finterest, an effort was made to gather all available materials, usually in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">form of\u202fhistorical, technical documentation and plans, but also projects formed with the\u202fpurpose of\u202fpossible renewal of\u202fsome segments of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">system, as well as the\u202fmost detailed descriptions of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">original parameters of\u202firrigation systems of\u202finterest. There are archives at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">central level, both domestic (National Archives of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic in Prague, Moravian Provincial Archives in Brno, Silesian Provincial Archives in Opava) and international (especially Allgemeines Verwaltungsarchiv and Finanz- und Hofkammerarchiv in Vienna for the\u202fperiod up to 1918). In addition, there are regional and district archives, as well as possibly the\u202farchives of\u202finstitutions and personal collections of\u202fwater management specialists. In addition, attention was focused on publications on water management in rural areas with a historical context. One of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">most important research topics is the\u202fquestion of\u202fgenesis, operation, and importance of\u202fso-called water\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cooperatives, which have been in existence since the\u202f19<\/span><sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><\/sup><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> century in order to regulate water courses and conditions at a local, regional, and transregional scale. The \u202fbasic prerequisites enabling the\u202fimplementation of\u202fmodern irrigation systems in were mainly favourable legislative, finance, and expert technical conditions. Education and promotion also played an important role. The \u202fcrucial legal regulation which defined water management in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">western part of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Habsburg Empire was the\u202fImperial water act of\u202f1869. This formed the\u202fbasis for more detailed legislation in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">individual countries of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">monarchy. These legislative documents were only part of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">whole, which enabled the\u202fdevelopment of\u202fwater management in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">sector of\u202fregulation and amelioration. Other pillars were financial support, the\u202festablishment of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">an amelioration fund, and other subsidies. The \u202ffinal pillar was the\u202feducation, propagation, and transfer of\u202fexperience as well as the\u202fresults of\u202fresearch which took place at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time. Water cooperatives became necessary tools for the\u202fdevelopment of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">amelioration and irrigation. The \u202fsystem created, with changes and modifications, was preserved and functioned well in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech lands practically speaking until the\u202fsocial changes after 1948. In 1955 a new water law was adopted, the\u202ffirst water management plans were assembled, water cooperatives gradually disappeared and, at<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">same time, the\u202fUnited Agricultural Unit (JZD), Machine Tractor Station (STS), and other parts of\u202fsocialist agriculture were formed. At<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">time, the\u202ftraditional irrigation of\u202fmeadows was gradually abandoned and finally disappeared.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559737&quot;:-6,&quot;335559740&quot;:220,&quot;335559991&quot;:0,&quot;469777462&quot;:[720,454,567],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,4,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This irrigation, however, represents one of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">main typological groups of\u202firrigation with a long term history \u2013 irrigation of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">agricultural land with meadows with fodder for food production. The \u202fmethod was carried out mainly by basin irrigation using various water supply, distribution, and drainage systems. These are historically the\u202foldest irrigation systems in Europe [1\u20134], some of\u202fwhich have survived until the\u202fpresent day. Geographically this applies in particular to the\u202ffollowing countries: Germany, the\u202fformer Austro-Hungarian Empire, England, Spain [7, 8], Portugal [10], France, and Italy. The \u202fimplementation of\u202fmeadow irrigation was not an exception even in countries where problems with a lack of\u202fwater would not be expected, such as Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Andorra, Iceland, and even Greenland [2\u20133].<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:227,&quot;335559737&quot;:-6,&quot;335559740&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[720,454,567],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,4,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outside European countries, we can mention that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">modern development of\u202firrigation systems in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">19<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> century took place to a great extent in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">United States of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">america. It concerned large areas of\u202fnewly settled western states (e.g. [10]).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:227,&quot;335559737&quot;:-6,&quot;335559740&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[720,454,567],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,4,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Reasons for installing meadow irrigation systems should be divided according to the\u202faltitude of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">given area into the\u202ffollowing basic zones: high mountainous landscapes, mountainous landscapes, uplands, lowlands, and hilly landscapes (hilly area). In high altitude areas, the\u202fneed for irrigation was connected\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with the\u202fneed to provide fodder and allow vegetation to regrow more quickly than would have been possible under local conditions \u2013 irrigation systems in this way allowed the\u202fsoil to warm up earlier. In<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">lowlands, it was necessary to artificially regulate the\u202finflow of\u202fwater in different vegetation periods, meaning leading it away from the\u202fland, e.g. during summer floods, or, on the\u202fother hand, bringing in water in late spring.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:2,&quot;335551550&quot;:6,&quot;335551620&quot;:6,&quot;335559731&quot;:227,&quot;335559737&quot;:-6,&quot;335559740&quot;:220,&quot;469777462&quot;:[720,454,567],&quot;469777927&quot;:[0,0,0],&quot;469777928&quot;:[0,4,1]}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A number of\u202firrigation systems were also constructed in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic [11, 12]. Many of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">them have been preserved in varying states of\u202fdisrepair and damage. Nevertheless, some systems with continuously repaired selected technological structures for the\u202fdistribution of\u202fwater (sluice gates, culverts) further serve as part of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">anti-flood protection systems (typically the\u202fMorava river floodplain). Some parts of\u202fthis functional complex are completely preserved and continuously maintained and serve new purposes. An iconic part of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">historical multifunctional complex in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Pomoravi region is the\u202fBa\u0165a Canal.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic), the\u202ffollowing areas and locations were selected on the\u202fbasis of\u202fliterature-based research and discussions with experts in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">field and those members of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">public who remember such systems:<\/span><span The \u202fmethodology involves a range of\u202fcriteria and variables that form the\u202fcategories of\u202fso-called intrinsic value, cultural heritage value, and value of\u202fpotential and feasibility. These countries are also one of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">initiators who try to protect intangible cultural heritage related to traditional practices of\u202fmaintenance and operation of\u202fmeadow irrigation. Within<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">their methodological activities, the\u202fMCPD issues methodological guidelines for the\u202fidentification, classification, evaluation, and protection of\u202fthis type of\u202fmonument [20]. At<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">same time, it carries out continuous extensive research on individual types of\u202ftechnical and industrial structures in various sectors, with the\u202faim of\u202f identifying and documenting significant monument buildings as well as typical examples of\u202fimportant milestones in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">technological development of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">water management sector. At present, some objects historically connected with irrigation can also be found among the\u202fcultural monuments of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Czech Republic. These are, in particular, Opatovice Canal and the\u202fold pumping station Paseky in \u0160ilhe\u0159ovice, near Opava. The \u202fentire former irrigation system is practically protected as part of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">extensive area of\u202fBabi\u010d\u010dino \u00fadol\u00ed (Granny\u2019s valley) national cultural monument, in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">area of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ratibo\u0159ice Chateau near \u010cesk\u00e1 Skalice and the\u202frelated section of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00dapa river. Their significance, also from the\u202fpoint of\u202fview of\u202fpotential heritage protection, lies in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">identification and documentation not only of\u202fsolitary structures but mainly of\u202fentire systems\/functional complexes with descriptions of\u202finterrelationships between them. Independent objects or structures do not need to be particularly exceptional, although their involvement in a wider functional complex can create a uniquely undertaken solution. In this water management field, criteria such as typological value, value of\u202ftechnological flow, authenticity of\u202fform and function, value of\u202ftechnological and systemic links with an overlap on agriculture and industry are especially important.
